How does a Free Tour Lima work?
-
The same as every free tour all around the world, we also adopt this style and run our tours based on tips. Keep in mind that we won't use our free tours as a way to sell you paid tours. We only promote our own tours and have no connection with third-party agencies interested in selling paid tours through a free walking tour.
-
Are you affiliated with Haku Tours?
We are an independent agency and focus only on free tours. We understand that people might think we are a division of a macro tour agency because of the high-quality level of service we deliver, but no, we don't believe that to have access to a great tour you need to pay obscene amounts of money. Local prices, local services, and local quality are what we proudly deliver.
2. Do you offer Downtown Lima Tours?
Of course we do! Our Uncovered Lima Tour covers most of the areas where only locals go to work every day. Of course, we enter the touristic Historic Center, but that is just to have access to the other side of Lima, where the youth has turned historical landmarks into bars and rock 'n' roll joints that come alive during the night. It's a free walking tour, but beyond what you will mostly see on a city tour.
3. Do you run Bike Tours in Lima?
We don't offer that service for now; however, we will publish many tour ideas, and with time maybe we can run those. There are plenty of agencies already offering this service, and we are all about doing things that no one else is doing in the tourism industry.
4. Do you run a Miraflores Walking Tour?
We will not be running tours in any touristic spot. Our motto is: if tourists don't know about it, we take them there. Miraflores and Barranco are the most touristic areas in Lima, so we avoid showing what everyone can already see through a YouTube video or a TikTok reel.
5. How is the Free Foodie Tour Barranco?
We actually go to the oldest part of Barranco. From there we go to Surco Pueblo, which is the place where African and Indian slaves cooked for the rich people living by the coast. Therefore, it is the epicenter of Peruvian gastronomy as we know it, not as it became after the international Peruvian food boom.
So get ready to visit houses instead of restaurants and see how a 60-year-old lady is running things in the kitchen.
6. What is the difference between you and Free Walking Tour Peru?
We do not use free walking tours to sell paid tours to Machu Picchu or anywhere else. We solely focus on diverse, off-the-beaten-path free tours.
7. Do you run Free Walking Tours in Cusco?
We used to, but not at this moment. Maybe in the future, because there are plenty of hidden places. As long as we keep the group to a maximum of 6 people, we can go anywhere we want.
8. How much is OK to pay on a Free Walking Tour?
There is really no base or limit here. To be honest, it all depends on the tour guide and the environment you get to discover. The vibe is the most important thing. But if you really want numbers, check how much a city tour costs, and if your free walking tour felt like a city tour, then you can pay what is advertised by a city tour agency. Because you never took a free walking tour—you were on a city tour with a different name.
9. What places can I visit for free in Lima?
You have a handful of hidden places with free entrance. Imagine walking down a street, suddenly finding a little door, walking in, and discovering a colonial house that still has parts of a monastery inside; a little restaurant that connects you to the Central Market; a building that you can simply enter, take the elevator, and find the best viewpoint in the city. All of this is free, but you must be with the right local people.
We are all about that in our tours. We have never entered the rooftop of a cathedral to see the city from above... no way!
10. How much does a tour in Lima cost?
Prices may vary depending on what they offer and what you want to get. It's all a negotiation. But let me tell you, we have been all over South America, and it shouldn't be as expensive as in Mexico, Colombia, or Panama. There is really no way some of the prices you see online are right.
11. Do you run a Barranco Walking Tour?
Yes, we have designed a tour based on the archaeology of street art in Barranco since its beginnings in 1998. This art was introduced by a Peruvian guy who lived in California named Trans—that was his artistic name. That was the genesis, and then it evolved into modern styles.
Keep in mind that you won't only see the Bridge of Sighs and the pre-approved murals shown in the most touristic photos of Barranco. No way. We all know those are publicity pieces for tourists and locals. We will take you to the train station to see realism, market backstreets to see bubble graffiti, and the streets where this art was truly art and not a hipster movement to keep tourists happy.
12. Do you run a Free Walking Tour Barranco?
We run a free walking tour in the depths of Barranco, but we have titled it the Free Street Art Tour Barranco, since most of the bohemian youth movement developed through this art, and most of the sociological changes had a connection to this urban culture.
So be careful: a free walking tour in Barranco is usually the same as a city tour. We do something completely different.
13. Do you run a Free Foodie Tour Barranco?
Yes, we run free food tours, but on the outskirts of the most touristic district after Miraflores. You have no idea about all the flavors you can find on that side. The vibe is different. People are real. They don't pose or dress up to impress; they are impressive by themselves.
So be careful again—we run all those tours, but in a completely different way from what city tours or most food tours do.
14. Are you Lima Gourmet Tours?
No, we go by Forbidden Tours and deliver 10 free tours, from food tours to walking tours, and all of them are run in the most local areas. Zero touristic areas are included in our tours.
15. Are you Exquisito Peru Food Tours?
The same thing that happens with Haku Tours happens here. People see our website and videos and think this service must be part of a high-quality tourism company, but no. We don't work with other agencies. We try to keep it as independent as possible and stay free to deliver the service we truly want to deliver.
16. Do you run a Street Food Tour Peru?
Of course! Street food tours are very popular all over the world. The only difference is that we visit one or two street food stalls and then go back to hidden houses that serve as restaurants. Our tour is not only about eating; the vibe is much more important. Getting to know the people, asking them questions—that is what traveling is about: discovering and surprising yourself, not through recommendations or videos, but through the beauty of life's surprises.
17. Are you Tasty Tours?
No, we are Forbidden Tours and run food tours in the most local and non-touristic areas of Lima.
18. Do you run tours in Miraflores and Barranco?
No, we don't go to touristic places. We can recommend alternative routes, but we want to show travelers non-gentrified local culture.
19. Do you run tours in Miraflores and Barranco?
No, we don't go to touristic places. We can recommend alternative routes, but we want to show travelers non-gentrified local culture.
